King of the deadpan comics, Jackie is a comedian's comedian. His wry, sad-sack style has influenced many of today's popular comedians. Mr. Vernon has left us, but his sense of humor is still with us to enjoy for years to come.

Funniest Roasts of The Century Vol. 1
Comedy legends Milton Berle, Pat McCormick, Slappy White, Pat Buttram, Jackie Vernon, Henny Youngman, and Dick Shawn roast some of the biggest stars in show business. Find out what goes on behind closed doors at those infamous "celebrity roasts". Now for the first time ever, you have a front row seat, and listen as the greatest "roastmaster" of them all, Milton Berle, delivers his unique brand of stinging one-liners to some of the most famous people in comedy. The "stage roast" was a tradition in show business as a means to raise money for worthwhile charities. Tickets were available only to members of show business private clubs and their guests, and would cost as much as $250.00 each. The comedians and stars would allow themselves to be torn to shreds, with the most explicit language ever heard. Over the years, millions of dollars were raised and donated to hospitals, underprivileged children's organizations, senior citizen homes, and many other charities. No women were allowed to attend these affairs during the time period that these events took place, as the material was considered too offensive for delicate ears.

This is to David, who had the good fortune to have been born to such a wonderful father. My favorite bit that Jackie Vernon did was a running gag about being a member of The Dull Men’s Club. Their activities involved going to dept. stores and trying on loud ties for excitement, and their symbol was the Butter Knife! What a sad loss. He was one of those rare irreplaceable souls. This scary world could really use him now.

Yes, Nathan Davis, I remember the clicker and safari slide show routine very well. I use to watch Jackie perform it on the Ed Sullivan Show back in the 1960’s. His straight-face delivery of that routine put me in stitches! I am sorry to learn only now that Mr. Vernon has passed on. In my 53 years on earth I truly believe he was the originator of dead pan humor.

I well remember Jackie Vernon in the 70’s and early 80’s, and was a great fan of his. One routine in particular had me on the floor. He stood facing the camera with a clicker in his hand as he narrated a slide show of an African Safari he had supposedly been on. Does anyone else remember this routine? Best wishes, N

I’ve surfed here after reading where Jay London, a comic who competed on "Last Comic Standing" listed Jackie as his idol. London’s act is deadpan one liners and he’s truly a throwback to a lost art in comedy. I loved watch Jackie on Ed Sullivan and as I recall was a frequent guest on the Merv Griffin Show.

I am a school teacher and we need to find out if the Watermelon piece by Jackie Vernon has ever been published in a book. If so, which one? And was it classified as a story or free verse poem? Can anyone help?

Hey there, I just stumbled on this website after doing a google search, and was really thrilled to see all the rememberences. My dad was (is?) Jackie Vernon and it’s nice to see that he has not be forgotten. If anyone has questions about his routines, I’m happy to answer them. David

Strange, I am the second Bob Donaldson to comment here and am also looking for tapes, records, etc. of Jackie Vernon. The greatest dead-pan comedian of all. His Watermelon routine was the funniest ever. His unique brand of humor, although cut short by his untimely death, lives on in the hearts and minds of those who heard him.

Looking for the old Slideshow routine that he used to do on Ed Sullivan..."Here we are on an African safari...click...here’s our guide...here’s our guide walking ahead on the trail...click...here’s our guide stepping into quicksand...click...here’s his hat..."

I had the absolute distinct pleasure of appering with Jackie Vernon in New Orleans many years ago. Without a doubt, one of the funniest people that I have ever known, and a truly nice guy. What a great and giving guy he was. I still sorely miss him very much!!

Yes, Yes!! Let’s don’t forget Frosty the Snowman. Jackie comes alive for me when we watch Frosty during the holidays. My son and d-in-law, married 10 years have finally made me a Grandma. His name is Ben and I gave him the Frosty video when he was about 18 months old. He just adores Frosty and even had his picture taken with him at Sears. What a tribute to Jackie Vernon, not to mention the deserved royalties for his family.
